Cemetery notes and/or description:
Opened in 1822, City Cemetery replaced Nashville's previous public cemetery which was located just north of today's State Capitol building. Several of the city's founders, as well as citizens of every race, religion and economic status, are among the 20,000 interred here. City Cemetery was closed to further burials after 1878, except for pre-purchased lots. All extant interment records have been transcribed and entered into a searchable database available on the Nashville Public Library website. Additionally, the Nashville City Cemetery Association has posted photographs of extant legible markers on its website (linked above). The cemetery has quite a few unmarked graves as well as old, now illegible markers.
