Cemetery notes and/or description:
Camp Floyd/Stagecoach Inn State Park is located in Fairfield Utah and this cemetery is part of the park. In 1858 the Cemetery was established but just 3 years later in 1861 the troops stationed at Camp Floyd returned to fight in the Civil War and abandoned the Camp & Stagecoach stop as well as the cemetery. Due to poor record keeping on the Army's part the actual number, location, and identities of soldiers buried in the cemetery is not known with certainty. In 1913 the War Department built and dedicated a monument in the cemetery. In 1960 the local American Legion built a fence around the cemetery and placed 84 markers for the people they believed to be buried here. These memorials were photographed and documented by a Find-a-Grave volunteer. Starting in 2009 an effort was been made to identify the actual locations and identities of the people buried here. Army records had revealed that almost half of the names on the markers were of individuals who died someplace other than Camp Floyd or were never even with Johnston's Army. Ground penetrating radar revealed 33 burials and one double burial. In 2011 all 84 of the American Legion stones were removed and markers were located at each burial site. They are simply marked "Unknown". There is now a new sign listing 44 people who may (or may not) be buried in this cemetery.
