In 1854, Lawrence County was created from parts of Butler, Beaver and Mercer counties. In 1855, Lawrence County created Plain Grove (sometimes Plaingrove) Township. As a result of this, the Butler County Presbyterian congregation began their new church in Slippery Rock, Butler County, Pennsylvania
