Cemetery notes and/or description:
In 1936, 18 skeletal remains were uncoverd by the National Park Service (NPS) in an old cemetery, which previously was surrounded by a brick wall. The graveyard was kept through the years by the Nelsons on Martiau property. Tombstones of George and Elizabeth Martiau Read were uncovered at this time while Buckner Street was being graded. These remains were found in May 1936 when the NPS was laying a water main along Buckner Street. Five years later on May 30, 1941, the remains were reinterred in the Grace Episcopal Churchyard with ceremony presided over the the church curate, Lt.Col.(Ret) A.A.Pruden, a retired Army chaplain. A firing squad and bugler from Fort Monroe participated, and members of the Thomas Nelson, Jr., Sons of the American Revolution chapter, placed the containers. The memorial oration was by Rev. John Baer Stoudt, D.D., of Allentown, Pa.. There was no stone marking the community grave until descendants arranged for it in 1994. During the years before burial, careful study of the bones were made and the Martiau gravesite was mapped. Bennett T. Gale, NPS park engineer reported to B. Floyd Flickinger, park superintendent, his belief that grave 1 was Elizabeth Martiau Reade, 2 was George Reade, 4 was Jane's daughter Jane Martiau or his 2nd wife Isabella Martiau, 6 was Nicolas Martiau, 7 was wife Jane Martiau, 9 a small casket possibly of Nicolas's son Nicolas who died young.
