|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
West Street Cemetery was opened after the North Main Street Cemetery was nearly full. The first burial was in 1817. When Evergreen Cemetery opened in 1861, burials at West Street dropped off rapidly and by the end of the 19th century, the cemetery was no longer used. Many graves were moved to Evergreen.
The cemetery has long been in poor condition due to neglect and vandalism that were already a serious problem there in the 1800s. Many stones are damaged and illegible, and a number have disappeared over time. In recent years there has been more effort put into maintaining the cemetery. A number of military stones for Revolutionary and Civil War soldiers have been placed and a veterans monument erected.
The cemetery is located in downtown Rutland on West Street just west of the post office.
