The Carroll Family Cemetery lies in what is now East Finley and Morris Townships, Washington County, Pennsylvania northeast of the intersection of Craft Creek Road and Mt. Zion Road.
The first persons buried in the "Carroll Graveyard" are John and Hamilton Carroll, brothers of Robert Carroll, Sr. who were killed and scalped in the summer of 1781 during an Indian uprising. The cemetery is the burial place for at least 64 others, the last known burial occurred on January 7, 1901.
The Carroll Family Cemetery has been "read" numerous times. The two most notable were conducted by:
• The Canonsburg Chapter of the D. A. R. on August 11, 1939
• Helen Stollar Borkowski in 1984
Included among those buried there are Robert Carroll, Sr. and his wife Mary, who emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland on August 14, 1768 and landed at New Castle, Delaware on October 3, 1768. They, along with Robert's brothers John and Hamilton and his sister Jane, traveled inland, settling briefly in the vicinity of present day Finleyville, Pennsylvania. Within a few years he and his family pushed westward and settled finally in southwestern Washington County. He was granted a land patent for 388 acres, on which the Carroll Cemetery is located, on June 7, 1787.
Robert and Mary had seven children. At the time of this writing, (March 16, 2010), their progeny number over 900.
Perhaps the most distinguished of those buried in the Carroll Graveyard are:
• Robert H. Carroll who was killed in action at the Battle of Bloomery Gap, (West) Virginia in the American Civil War on February 14, 1862. He was the first resident of Washington County, Pennsylvania to be killed in that war.
• Joseph M. Carroll who, a brick maker by trade, wrote HISTORY OF THE CARROLLS in 1897.
