|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Imam Husayn and the 72 martyrs of the Battle of Karbala were buried here in October, 780 A.D. The shrine has been damaged by fire and by opponents of Shia Islam, and was the site of several suicide bombings after the US invasion and occupation of Iraq began in 2003. It remains one of the holiest places for Shias, who make pilgrimages, most notably to celebrate Ashura, the annual holiday that marks the anniversary of Imam Husayn's death.
