On November 9, 2023, the Government of Canada announced that Brookside Cemetery has been designated a National Historic Site, recognizing the site for its historical significance to Canada.
The Field of Honour at Brookside Cemetery includes several elements that make it nationally significant. The veterans' site features a collection of upright military monuments that cannot be found on this scale anywhere else in Canada. The design is used in the largest Fields of Honour across the world to commemorate veterans of the two World Wars. Also, the Tear Drop section of the Field of Honour is the only section in a cemetery in Canada where so many war dead can be found interred together in one section.
Brookside Cemetery offers a park-like setting with mature trees and abundant wildlife. The cemetery is one of the largest in Canada with more than 100,000 burials that have taken place since 1878, as well as a Field of Honour established in 1915 with more than 10,000 Veterans, Service Members and War Heroes interred alongside each other.
Brookside is one of the oldest cemeteries in Winnipeg. This cemetery reflects the history of the people of the city and surrounding areas. It is the final resting place of decorated war heroes, politicians, athletes, and people from all walks of life. It is a perpetual record of yesteryear and a sanctuary of peace and quiet.

This cemetery is operated by the City of Winnipeg, which provides both searchable and downloadable listings of burials in all of its municipally-operated cemeteries via its website.
A plaque, dedicated on June 15, 2003, explains the creation of the municipal cemetery in 1878, in an area that was then part of the Rural Municipality of Rosser.
A broad cross-section of Manitobans are buried here.
There are sections dedicated to military personnel as well as a section for people who donated their bodies to medical research and teaching at the University of Manitoba. Additionally, separate monuments in the cemetery commemorate the firefighters who lost their lives in the course of their duties and the 26 victims of the Dugald Train Disaster, which occurred on September 1, 1947.
In 2022, the cemetery became a municipally-designated heritage site.
