This cemetery was part of a land grant made to William Hendricks in 1797, confirmed to his son, Isaac Hendricks and later inherited by Isaac's daughter, Martha Ann. She married Albert Gallatin Philips, Sheriff of Duval County from 7 February 1833 to 1838.
Sometime prior to 1844 they gave this piece of land for a site of a Methodist Church, a school and a cemetery. It is believed to be the first Methodist Church in the Jacksonville area on the southside of the St. John's River. The church was in great need of repairs and service were discontinued after the War Between the States. The cemetery was a free community cemetery. Many of the old markers were made of cedar.
