Cemetery notes and/or description: In 1851, the Chestnut Hill Cemetery land was purchased by the town of Burlington from Jonathan Bell for $200, and gained its name from the five chestnut trees on the property. It was purchased for burial use as the Old Burial Ground had nearly reached capacity. Some stones pre-date the 1851 opening of the cemetery, and were possibly moved from the Old Burial Ground in the center of town, which was still used sporadically after 1850.
The cemetery sits on 15.65 acres. The earliest death date is around 1814.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as BUR.801 Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
This cemetery is referred to as GR2 Chestnut Hill Cemetery in the "Vital Records of Burlington Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849".
