|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The city of Champoeg (pronounced shampoo ee), Marion County doesn't exist any more. The city used to sit on the Willamette (pronounced Will am et) River. On 2 Dec 1861 the river rose 55 ft and covered the city in 7 feet of water. Back then the cities were built of wood. The city was never rebuilt. The neighboring county is Yamhill (where I live) about 5 miles away from Champoeg Cemetery. The city of Newberg wasn't established until 1889. The first postmaster, named Sebastian Brutscher, named the city from his home town in Germany "Neuberg". Newberg is the closest city to Champed Cemetery.
The records for Champed are kept by a family across the street from the cemetery. There is a Marion County Historical Society that helped me with this information and the location of the cemetery records.
