|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery is on the site of the original New Chapel AME Church. The Church was located on land previously part of the George Young farm. A 1937 WPA Writer's Project interview provides information on the Church's origin. Mary Smith, former slave of the Young family, states "My marster give my mother de spot of ground and de lumber for our church which was named New Chapel. De second church is on de same spot." New Chapel Church was relocated from this site during WW II, when the US Government acquired the land for military purposes. The cemetery is much larger than identified graves indicate. A great many graves do not have commercial stones, but a variety of grave indicators: brick grave outlines, small concrete markers, "hog wire" enclosures, common field stones, and many, many unmarked sunken graves.
