Hartley Cemetery began as the Masonic Cemetery in about 1860 when Peter Barnes gave a plot of land in the S/E corner of the present cemetery and later sold the rest of the land to the Cemetery Association. The new part of the cemetery was patented and sold to the association by William Gully around 1872. The Masonic Lodge was keeper of the cemetery and renamed it Hartley Cemetery to honor a brother Mason, Henry Hare Hartley who would have been installed as the Masonic Lodge Grand Master of the State of California had he not been struck down by a massive heart attack at 41 years of age on March 12, 1868. He was buried with honors by the Masonic Lodge in the Old Sacramento City Cemetery and records indicate that the funeral was attended by the largest massing of Masons ever recorded up to that date. Hartley Cemetery is now under the auspices of the Hartley Cemetery Association.
