Neuer Friedhof Potsdam
Phone: (0331) 28947-53
Opened in 1867 as the "Neuer Friedhof in der Saarmunder Strasse", it is now the main cemetery of the city of Potsdam, located just across the street from the Old Cemetery. It also contains about 2400 German veterans' graves from the two world wars. The cemetery covers an area of 259,520 mē, or 64.2 acres.
Potsdam is the capital of the German State of Brandenburg, located just South-West of Berlin.
Please note that the final resting places in Germany are not eternal, due to lack of space. This cemetery has a "period of repose" of 20-25 years. Once the time is up for a renewal of the "lease" the cemetery administration will place a small sticker on the gravestone to alert the family to contact the office of the cemetery. Unless the family of the deceased pays for another period of 20-25 years, or the grave is of historical importance (in that case the city of Potsdam will carry the costs), it will be leveled and re-used. Leftover stones will be collected and eventually crushed and used as gravel in road construction.
