|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Pine Grove United Methodist Church and its cemetery are located on South Carolina State Road 340, which is basically one of the roads that run between Timmonsville and Darlington, South Carolina. The church is only a few miles outside of Timmonsville, and people around the church's area get their mail out of Timmonsville, but Pine Grove UMC is actually located just inside Darlington County. Timmonsville is in Florence County. The community in which the present-day church sits, the Lake Swamp community, is partially based in Darlington County, and partly in Florence County. The original Pine Grove Methodist Church building still stands near I-20, and it is still used for congregations. The old church is located not far from today's Pine Grove UMC. The congregation of the old church built onto and moved into the old Thornal Cemetery property in 1951. Even long before that, Pine Grove Methodist had been burying their dead at the Thornal Cemetery at the back of the present-day property, and the all of the newer graves have been added in front of them in the direction of the church itself. Many have mistakenly referred to the graveyard as the Thornhill Cemetery.
