|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The Oates Cemetery is a beautiful, quiet, treelined cemetery located on the Upper Leggett Road approximately a mile north of the Crossroads AKA Jones Prairie Cemetery. It was originally a family cemetery located on the Caraway Oates family homestead in what was then known as Shady Grove. Seven generations of Oates are buried here. The first person to be buried here was one of Caraway Oates‚ slaves who died on the long trip from Henry County, Alabama, via covered wagon in 1854. She and her husband were considered members of the family; therefore, Caraway Oates would not bury her on the trail, but insisted on waiting until they reached their destination of the Shady Grove area of East Texas.
