|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery had its beginnings as an African American cemetery. There are burials as early as the late 1880's. Markers with earlier dates may have been moved from other cemeteries, specifically the A.M.E. Zion cemetery which partially washed away in 1886. Olive Hill is maintained by the city of Morganton and a limited number of burials are still allowed. There are probably several hundred unmarked graves in this cemetery. Some have been identified by death certificate, though exact burial place is unknown.
On some death certificates prior to 1950, this cemetery is referred to as the JONESBORO Cemetery. (referring to an old name for this section of Morganton)It is also called the Morganton Cemetery on some early death certificates.
