On Feb 24, 1896 John Purdy Jr. sold Purdy's Hill for $700 to St. John's Roman Catholic Church. This became Mt. St. James Cemetery.
The first burials were John Minehan and his son James. Their bodies were moved from Waterbury and buried in Mt. St. James on May 20, 1896.
Although there are still a few burials done here, most Catholics in town are buried in the newer Mt. Olivet cemetery.
