Often referred to as Cadogan North, Cadogan Lutheran Cemetery is locted in eastern Alberta about 6 kms south of Highway 13 on the paved road leading to the hamlet of Cadogan. The property is fenced and is easily identified by a large sign above wrought iron gates. This is open prairie country and farmers' fields border the cemetery on three sides. Prairie crocus still bloom amongst gravestones in early spring.
A tribute to the early settlers of this district is found on a brass plaque mounted on a cairn the reads as follows:
"The Hillcrest Heritage Society humbly and gratefully dedicates this plaque to the memory of our pioneers who braved the dangers and hardships of settling this area and wrestled a living from this land of prarie wool and poplars. These men and women faced the loneliness and despair of the new land but did not falter. They are our unsung heroes."
Originally land was purchased from the Canadian Pacific Railway by Andrew Fossen. In 1910 he donated to the Lutheran church enough land on which to build a church and establish a cemetery. However the plan to build a church across the road from the cemetery never materialized. Although considered to be a Lutheran cemetery the facility is used by other members of the community as well.
Maintenance of the grounds is provided under contract as the need is most pressing when farmers are the busiest. Presently Mrs. Florence Fossen, Box 96, Cadogan, T0B 0T0 maintains records of the cemetery and acts as a resource person for those interested.
