Shady Grove Cemetery was established in 1816. There are a number of gravesites marked with small white marble blocks in various areas of the cemetery. It is possible that they are simply placeholders. However, it was noted that these markers are in the older sections of the cemetery and their placement suggests the marking of known gravesites.
According to local residents and various printed sources, the Brown family first settled in and owned the cemetery property. There are several very old grave markers in the cemetery with the Brown name: 1834, 1843, 1852. Presleys, Owens, Montgomerys, Sparks, and Boltons were other early settlers.
A Presley section of the cemetery is fenced with an iron fence and gate. Family members relate that the fence was ordered from France by Hosea Crawford Presley and his son, Crawford Alexander Presley, when Lovely Word Presley, Hosea's wife, died in 1866. The entire cemetery is fenced and maintained and remains in use.
