CEMETERY HISTORY taken for the Waller Co Cemetery Book dated 1977.
In 1872, Mr. Tom Sterling (a white man) gave four acres of land for a Church, a school and a cemetery. This land was on the south side of Orange Creek. In 1923, grave digging became a problem to find space to prevent going down on old bodies. Plans were made by Rev. Deaver to organize grave committees to select land for a new cemetery. Sandy land was preferred, he said. He called a meeting to get organized and only a few came.
In the middle of 1924, the land was found. In the meting the land report was put on the table. R. S. Jackson, Sr. would let them 4 acres of land for $55.00 per acre.
To raise the money, each family that wanted to become a member was assessed $5.00. The money was eventually raised and the cemetery land that for the new location, now Mt. Zion Cemetery, was purchased.
