Oxford Twp. Location from Oxford: to the section line North, W.

The original area measured 188' x 262'. The plat was filed June 15, 1876. An addition was made in 1966.

The first Board of Directors were John C. Murphy, Pres; A Graff, Sed; Ansel Gridley, Treas; Geo I Walton and B F Smith.

The oldest legible marker is dated 1872.

One marker is of special interest. It has the name of Buffington in large letters across the top with this data:

Jacob M Co D 32nd Ia Inf Jan 21, 1843 July 18, 1854

Ione H His Wife March 4, 1931 May 14, 1921

This inscription: "First White Couple To Homestead In Sumner County And Always Remained Here Till The End."

Mr. Buffington was the first white man to cross the river and settle in Sumner Co. This he did on April 9, 1870.

In an area near the Buffington marker are 2 large memorials on a common base that bears this inscription: "To the memory of our heroic dead" Erected by J M Buffington in 1926. The memorial with the lady on top has this inscription: "In memory of Mothers, Grandmothers, Sisters, Daughters, Wives, Sweethearts, and Lady Friends of the Soldiers of 1861 to 1865, who saved the Union and Freed the Prisoners who were bought and sold like cattle".

An old marker reads: "Georgeanna Walton, Sept 15, 1875." She was a small child.
