Red River County
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery is located in the northwest quadrant of Red River County, Texas. This cemetery can be reached by going north on Hwy. 37 and turning west onto FM 2118 at Negley community. Proceed on FM 2118 about 4 miles and the cemetery is on the right on top of a low hill. The earliest deed dated 11 Jun 1896 and filed (no date) in Book CH Vol Q Page 435 conveys '4 acres Jackson Tuggle survey District Court Records' from Tuggle Springs Cemetery to Tuggle Springs Cemetery. Another deed dated 30 Jun 1905 and filed for record on 30 Jun 1905 conveys '4 acres Jackson Tuggle survey Deed J. W. Dale to J. M. Lowder' from Tuggle Springs Cemetery to Tuggle Springs School. The earliest marked grave is that of M. J. Grigsby and her infant child who died 26 Jan 1864, not in 1861 as recorded elsewhere, including the gate to the cemetery. This cemetery was surveyed by James Loyd and Mattie Irene Tate Griggs in August of 1996. After reading in 58 years of obituaries and comparing against an earlier reading by Nancy Nelson formerly of Manchester, we, Lawrence and Sue Dale, decided to re-walk this cemetery on 13 Sep 1999 and verify the new information. In the spring of 2000, a group of interested people did much beautifying to this cemetery. Some of the work included a new concrete floor for the pavilion and a new pipe fence for the cemetery. Also at this time, markers were installed on the new fence dividing the cemetery into four distinct areas. Section 1 is the southeast quadrant, Section 2 is the southwest, Section 3 is northeast and Section 4 is the northwest. Mattie Irene Tate Griggs took a copy of the burials and re-walked this cemetery on Thursday June 1 2000 placing all individuals into the proper area. Our thanks go to these individuals who gave so freely of their time. We again visited the site on 11 Jan 2004 to take the GPS coordinates. We also did a re-walk of the cemetery adding new burials and noting marker changes. As of 31 Dec 2004 this cemetery had 554 documented burials. During the ensuing years we have attempted to keep this cemetery updated. As of 24 Nov 2010 we now have 586 documented burials in this cemetery.
