|Old Salem Cemetery|
Also known as: Salem Cemetery (Old), Sherwood Cemetery
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The old Salem Cemetery aka Sherwood Cemetery had the misfortune to be located where the Lake Fork Reservoir spread its waters and those who were laid to rest for eternity had to be found another home. The Sabine River Authority made an effort to preserve the contents of the 175 graves that had to be moved.
The Sabine River Authority has a complete listing of the graves that were removed and a platt map of the old cemetery. It is public record and you are welcome to call them at 903-878-2262 for more info on the graves that were moved. They informed me the graves were moved to a "new" Salem Cemetery which was is off Hwy. 17 on CR1540.
Directions to the Salem Cemetery where these individuals were re-interred is as follows: From the intersection of Texas 182 and FM 17 in Alba, take FM 17 north 2.6 miles to Wood County Rd. 1534, turn right on WCR 1534 and continue until it ends at WCR 1540. Turn right on WCR 1540 and go about .2 miles and the cemetery is on the right side of the road. [This Salem Cemetery is also listed on Find A Grave.]
