Cemetery notes and/or description: According to historical documents, the first interment was on land owned by Jason Raymond for his son, Elisha. About the same time Mr Raymond donated land for use as a cemetery by other community members. The monument with the earliest interment date is 1862.
In 1866 Jason and Julia Anderson, members of the Swedish Lutheran Church, (now First Lutheran Church) bought a portion of Mr. Raymond's land. In 1870 the Anderson's transferred ownership (quit claim deed) of two plus acres to the Swedish Lutheran Church for the purpose of establishing Section A of the Swedish Lutheran Cemetery (subsequently, First Lutheran Cemetery and currently Resurrection Cemetery).
As a result of a sheriff's sale to John and Christine Larson in 1901, an additional one plus acres were transferred to the Swedish Lutheran Church to expand the cemetery (Section B). An additional small piece of land for was added by Erick and Ellen Johnson in 1905. The first confirmed interment in Section B occurred in 1910.
In 1953, the State of Minnesota sold five acres to First Lutheran Church for Section C (first interment 1969) and Section D (first interment 1993).
Finally, in 1980, the State of Minnesota sold six acres to First Lutheran church, which included the Saint Peter State Hospital Original Cemetery. The agreement for this land acquisition stated that First Lutheran church would be responsible for maintaining the grounds of the Original Cemetery. In time, the additional land will be plotted for Section E. As of May, 2012 all known interments and photos of markers have been posted on Find A Grave.
