|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
The Curtis Family Cemetery is located on Moadus Road, less than 1/4 mile off Old Moulton Road. At the time the cemetery was established, Old Moulton Road was closer than it is today. The only headstone that is visible now, is from the grave of James M. Curtis. The headstone was dug up by children in about 1969. There is a residence located on the site of the original cemetery. All the gravemarkers were pushed over and fill dirt was hauled in to cover them in the 1960's, by the property owner at that time. The property was then sold. A subsequent lawsuit ensued and the property owner was cleared of any wrong doing because the cemetery was never registered with the county. The other tombstones will probably never be salvaged. Obituaries and death records, which are few from that time period, will have to be relied upon to establish the identities of those buried here.
Members of the family of James M. Curtis and Roberta J. Lowery Curtis are interred here in the area that was known locally as Curtis Wells. Mr. Curtis, whose tombstone is the only one remaining, was a minister and a farmer. Mr. and Mrs. Curtis were the parents of several children, two of whom are known to be buried in this cemetery. There are presently no means to determine exactly how many other graves exist in this "lost" family burial ground.
Take Hwy 67 west (Beltline Rd SW) to Modaus Rd SW. About ¼ mile before you get to Old Moulton Rd, it will be on your right. The grave of Reverend Curtis is located in the front yard of a residence, near the road.
