|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Land adjacent to the 11th century Church dedicated to St. Mary, known as the "Old Yard" to distinguish it from the "New Yard" at "new" St. Mary de Ballaugh Church of 1832. Interments here are ancient, with the oldest surviving Manx burial register beginning here June 17, 1598 (Averick daughter of Thomas Steane). Starting well before the first registry, interments continued after 1832, as some chose burial near their families in the "Old Yard".
"In the churchyard are tombs to the memory of the Rev. James Wilks [vicar of Kirk Michael 1752-1771 and rector of Ballaugh 1771-77] . . ." - from Feltham's Tour, 1798 -fpc Manx Notebook
