|Augusta (Pike County)|
|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Old Augusta Cemetery is a very old cemetery located in Lockhart Township, in the middle of the town of Augusta, at the corner of 4th Street/E Augusta 3rd Street and Washington Street/S August Broadway Street.
The cemetery was next to the Old Augusta Methodist Church that had been organized by the McCord family.
The church was disbanded sometime after the Great Depression and the buiilding has since been torn down. All that is left is the cemetery.
There are many burials in the cemetery, but very few headstones are remaining and the burial records which according to the Township were in the possession of the McCord family are now missing. Many graves were originally marked with a fieldstone or rock. Other headstones have deteriorated to the point of being unreadable, have been broken or are gone. As each year passes, more headstones disappear. This property is now owned by a private party.
The earliest burial of record according to the headstones is 1866.
