Cemetery notes and/or description: AKA Kirchhof I der evangelischen Georgen - Parochialgemeinde
Address: Greifswalder Straße 229-234 10405 Berlin
It was opened in 1814 as the second cemetery of the Lutheran George-Congregation, following the original one, which opened in 1693 at the Kleine Alexanderstrasse in the center of Berlin. King Friedrich II of Prussia then needed the lot of the original cemetery for a new caserne, so it was discontinued and leveled. With that act the second cemetery was named #1. It was continuously in use for the next one and a half century until 1970 when the common council of (then East-Berlin) the city decided to close the cemetery for new burials. After the reunification of the country and the city of Berlin in 1991 the cemetery was re-opened. Since then a lot of old and historically significant burial plots and graves are being restored. The old cemetery administration building received an extension in 2007 and now houses the archives of Berlins historic cemeteries. The cemetery has a size of 40,100 square meters, or almost 10 acres. It's now located in the Berlin-Prenzlauer Berg district. |
