This cemetery pre-dates the construction of the Saint Francis Xavier Catholic Chapel and the establishment of the Catholic cemetery which adjoins it. The 1974/1977 Saint Mary's County Historical Society and the Saint Mary's County Bicentennial Commission's first publication had the two as one cemetery.

But the Community Cemetery was actually used by Methodists and other Protestants {mostly the group who migrated here from the Eastern Shore or the Northern Neck of Virginia} after 1850. Later, when land was purchased for Saint George Island United Methodist Church, the present Methodist cemetery was opened and this cemetery was no longer used.

Except for a different style of fence along the road, you can't tell which cemetery is which. The large monument in the Old Community Cemetery was not erected until the late 1980s or the early 1990s.

This cemetery is not currently in use. The last interment was made around 1937.
