Cemetery notes and/or description: Hampstedt Cemetery which was outside the Charleston city limits in the mid-1800's was used by St. Matthews Lutheran Church from about 1840 to 1860. This property which was bought by the Charleston Housing Authority in 1981 is located on Reid Street between East Bay & Meeting Street and near Calhoun. The authority bought the land not knowing it was once a cemetery. For further information there was an article published February 20, 2009 in THE POST & COURIER, Charleston, SC newspaper about the city to move cemetery remains to Bethany Cemetery. If you are a descendant and have an ancestor buried there please contact Ralph Baily of Brockington & Associates at (843) 881-3128.
