Cemetery notes and/or description: This cemetery is located in two parts, across the road {St. George Church Road} from one another. The older part is on the same side of the road as the church & parish hall. The newer part is across the road. St. George Church was established about 1850 to serve Roman Catholics in the present Valley Lee / 2nd District area of St. Mary's County. For many years, the parish was served by Jesuit priests from St. Inigoes and later from Great Mills. The parish name reflects the old name for this area "St. George's Hundred," the old name for present St. Mary's River, once called "St. George's River," and near-by St. George's Sound and St. George Island. A near-by Episcopal Church and a near-by United Methodist Church all use a form of the name "St. George" - England's patron saint; a name brought by the early Maryland colonists in 1634. |
