History: As early as 1790, four men from Virginia (William Fristoe, Jeremiah Moore, Andrew Leach, and Henry Hagan) crossed the Potomac and started preaching the gospel in the Nanjemoy area. Hagan was once dragged into the Potomac River and held under until almost drowned. On raising him, his persecutors asked him if he “believed,” for the Scripture says none but believers should be baptized. Nearly exhausted, Mr. Hagan replied, “I believe that you intend to drown me.”
On December 15, 1791, Thomas Perry sold one acre of land, parts of the tract called “Morris Discovery” in Durham Parish, to George Dunnington, Trustee for the Baptist Church in Nanjemoy. The cost of the land was three shillings and nine pence, and it was to be used forever and for no other use than the Baptist church.
