The cemetery is approximately 12 acres in size. The cemetery began in the mid-1800s as a family graveyard owned by the James Cummins family. The graveyard became a community cemetery because James Cummins sold off plots to other families who needed land on which to bury their loved ones. In 1870, West Chester (then Union Township) Trustees purchased additional property from the grandson of James Cummins to enlarge the cemetery.
The cemetery is currently maintained by West Chester Community Services and remains an active cemetery. Cemetery information can be gotten by contacting:
