Cemetery notes and/or description:
Location: NW corner of town on 3rd Street Extension (Coal Mine Trail), Cle Elum, Kittitas County, Washington 98922

Address: c/o City Clerk of Cle Elum, 509-674-2262 x105

The name "Cle Elum" is derived from the Salishan word Tie-el-lum , meaning swift water. Situated near the second fall line of the Yakima River and its confluence with numerous mountain streams, the town began in the 1880s as a coaling station for the Northern Pacific Railroad, then under construction. Coal miners of two dozen nationalities flooded the area, and their presence is reflected in the various ethnic sections of the Laurel Hill plots. When the last coal mine closed in 1963, the area's economic emphasis switched to logging. As the town's focus changed, so did the town cemeteries. A defunct cemetery in South Cle Elum was relocated to this site. Additionally, the cemetery became the location for the town veteran's memorial, as favorite son Douglas Munro (the only Coast Guard Medal of Honor recipient) and many World War Two veterans were interred. The Kittitas County Genealogical Society is in the process of transcribing this cemetery.
