|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Presently known as Calvary Pioneer Memorial Park, this cemetery has been known by various names throughout the years: Catholic Cemetery, Calvary Cemetery, Mission Hills Cemetery, Old Catholic Cemetery, and Pioneer Park. The last burial took place on March 16, 1960. In June of 1968 the San Diego City Council declared abandonment of Calvary Cemetery as a location for any future burials. In February of 1969 Calvary Cemetery, Mission Hills was declared an historic site. Subsequently, unmarked stones were removed and above ground vaults were opened and the caskets interred directly below. In 1970, after recordings, rubbings and photographs of each monument and headstone had been made, they were removed and construction of Calvary Pioneer Memorial Park was completed. In September 1970 a memorial of bronze plaques was constructed in the center of the park. The headstones that had been removed were taken to Mount Hope Cemetery and lay in a ravine until they were buried in February 1988. A small number of them were set in concrete nearby as a memorial. In February 2000 the former Calvary Cemetery land was dedicated as a public park.
