|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Yarrabin was once a small village with shop, school, hall, church etc but there is nothing there now. The same applies to Merrendee. Yarrabin is approx. 23-25 miles from Mudgee, and Merrendee a couple of miles further on. The Burrendong Dam comes up to within about half a mile from the Merrendee homestead. There are no graves in this area. Whilst walking around back at Yarrabin, it was sad to see the many graves ringed only by stones, some with not even that, with cattle and sheep walking over them. . . This was an early gold mining area and, as always happens, when the gold runs out, so do the people."
The Greville's Post Office Directory for 1872 lists 45 males at Merendee, several with family names that appear in this list of inscriptions. At that time Merrendee enjoyed three incoming and outgoing mails per week - two via Mudgee and one via Ironbarks (since renamed Stuart Town). From Sydney, it travelled by rail to Rydal and then by Cobb & Co coach.
