The closest place of size to Medvezhjegorsk (Town of Bears) is Petrozavodsk, where death records were located; both are on the shores of Lake Onega. This area of Russia is called Karelia.

Thousands, including Finnish-Americans, were killed in the years 1936-38 by Soviet Secret Police on Stalin's orders in Sandarmoh Woods near the town of Medvezhjegorsk, Karelia.

It's been seen online that the Finnish-Americans who emigrated were called communists &/or radicals, but most went simply/na´vely because it was the Great Depression and they were promised a good living and wages ~ about $1,000 a year ~ to send home to the United States.

After 60 years of only rumors, graves were able to be found in 1997 after break-up of USSR. Story here:
