Cemetery notes and/or description:
Old City Cemetery - Donated by Stephen Glascock
Hannibal at North 7th St. & Paris Ave.
(no burials here after the late 1920's).
Listed as a "Church Cemetery" on some of the early maps.
Sacred ground. Religious gravesite. Indian burial site.
Many babies buried here too. The cemetery was desecrated by the illegal building of homes over the cemetery. Many of the bodies were never removed from this cemetery. Proof of this is the discovery of a body found in 2007 by boys playing in the area. The Hannibal Police Department sent the body to Texas for examination and it was found to have been a white european male who had died in the 1800's. Some say the cemetery is
haunted with ghosts being seen of those buried there. Some have seen Indians running around that location late at night.
They are the ghosts of Indians buried there. Admiral Robert E. Coontz in his journal remembered watching Indian burials at this cemetery as a young boy. The cemetery was just above the hill from his boyhood home on N. 6th Street. In 2014, a new home was built over this cemetery where the last body had been found in 2007 by the boys playing in that area.
The list of burials here is incomplete. There were so many hundreds more burials here in the 1830's thru 1880. Part of this list of burials came from the late Roberta Hagood who died in 2014.
