|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
To reach cemetery in Stanstead from Dufferin Street (main street), turn onto Maple Street. The cemetery is located at 14 Maple just past the post office on the same side of the road.
This is an old Catholic Cemetery that was established in 1831 and was closed for burials in 1907. At one time Sacred Heart Cemetery was one of only two Catholic cemeteries in the region and is the oldest parish south of Sherbrooke.
The cemetery stones have been re-arranged for easy viewing but unfortunately many of the stones are difficult and some impossible to read. It is interesting to note that many of the French families names had been anglicized for one reason or another and there are several different name spellings for many surnames. For example, Labbé, Labay, Libby and Vallée, Valley. There are also many Irish catholics buried here.
Researchers and family historians should contact or visit the Stanstead Historical Society at 535 Dufferin Street, Stanstead, Quebec, J0B 3E0 (819-876-7322) for further information and to obtain a more accurate burial list.
