HOMES IN LEOPOLIS THE FIRST CHURCHES

St Patrick's Church at Leopolis is situated about eleven miles northeast of Chillicothe. The members of this parish formerly belonged to St Columban's congregation. The church was built in 1884. Long before that time, however, divine service was held in private houses. The edifice was dedicated September 14, 1884.

The place was then known as Hogan's Settlement. Afterwards the name was changed to Leopolis, in honor of Pope Leo XIII. While Father Arsentus Fahle was pastor of Leopolis, he erected a convent and opened a Catholic school. The service of the Sisters of Mercy was secured. That was about 1890.

The school continued till 1898, when it was given up and the Sisters departed. The convent building yet remains, and is at present inhabited by Thomas Hall, Leopolis. It also has its own cemetery. The plot of ground for church and cemetery was donated by Thomas Hall. Divine service is held at Leopolis twice a month. At the present time Reverend C J Curry of Trenton is in charge.
