The Old Tent Congregation (connected with the Second Associate Reformed Presbytery of Pennsylvania) was organized in approximately 1796 with the Reverend Alexander McCay (McCoy) serving as the Pastor for nearly 25 years.
Shortly after the congregation was formed, land was set aside specifically for use as a cemetery for "Old Tent" members (the deed was dated June 9, 1796). Interments in the Old Tent Presbyterian Cemetery are believed to have been made between 1796 and 1882. As closely as can be determined, the first interment was in 1800, that of Andrew McClure (1722-1800) and the last interment was in 1882; that of Jane Terel (1811-1882), covering almost a century of use.
During the early years of this cemetery, Peter's Run Road passed on the side opposite its present route, which explains why the stones are facing East. Additionally, most religions believe the gravestones should face East.
The old church stood until the close of the Civil War when it was merged with the Buchanan Hill Church and the new organization called Roney's Point - now the Roney's Point United Presbyterian Church. The cemetery was deeded to the Ohio County Commissioners on
November 19, 1923.
Efforts to remediate the cemetery have recently been undertaken by the Ohio County Cemeteries Foundation, Inc. located in Wheeling, West Virginia. [Some text excerpted from Loh, Henry. Old Tent Camp Cemetery, 1796-1882. 2010.]
