|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
Nov. 2008: Access to the cemetery is quite good. Coming from Olive Hill traveling west on Rte. 60 go to Rte. 174. Make a left turn and travel 4.0 miles to Jct. 955. Turn left on Rte. 955 (Porter Creek Rd.) and travel 5.3 miles to Old Fairview Church Rd. (there is no sign but you can see another cemetery just up the hill and to the left. On geo-maps the road is identified as Porter Cemetery NO.2 Rd. 911 is in the process of setting up emergencies addresses)Turn left and travel .5 miles to the cemetery sign on the left.
Old Fairview Cemetery is located in Elliott County (verified by the overseer)and surrounded the old church that was torn down. The old church used to sit right in the middle of the cemetery near where the gate is. If you look closely at the photo of the church you will note near the lower right hand corner there's small marker. You can easily see the marker and the large flat area where the church stood as you enter the gate.
Raymond "Jewel" Porter is the overseer of the cemetery. He lives just across the road from the cemetery sign at the bottom of the hill. According to Jewel, the cemetery was fenced, cleared and cleaned up in 1957. The cemetery is well maintained as evidenced by the photos. He was very helpful in providing accurate historical information about the cemetery, other cemeteries in the area and the old church.Families are not charged a perpetual care fee when their loved ones are buried there but, donations for upkeep are absolutely appropriate.
If anyone would like to add to the description or to the history of this cemetery please, feel free to email Norm Nelson in my FAG public profile page.
