Names from this now abandoned cemetery, from which all bodies have been moved in 1913. Names in this listed have been secured from the burial record book of the City of Whiting. Sometimes this cemetery was referred to as the Barry Lake Cemetery, it was located at 121st street north to the water tower. This would have been the old Barrel House #2 on the Standard Oil [BP Refinery property]. The bodies were all removed to other cemeteries in Lake County, unless family members ask for them to be moved elsewhere. When looking for loved ones that were buried in this cemetery try looking in The New Whiting Cemetery, Concordia, Greek Catholic, Greenwood, St. Joseph St John, or Oak Hill Cemeteries.
The Copying of the records was done by Mrs. Waldon A. McBride of the Julia Watkins Brass Chapter of Crown Point, and Mrs. C. A. Huber of the Pottawatomie Chapter of Gary, IN.
In the records, there appears the following signed statement. "We the undersigned hereby certify the foregoing to be true and complete list of bodies removed from the Old Whiting Cemetery to other cemeteries, such as the list above. Signed J.P. Freemen, Inspector; C.A. Waite, City Engineer; George W. Jones, City Clerk
There are a total of 795 unknown removals from the cemetery, many of them are infant and children burials.
There is not a great deal of information given in the records, except names.
This project was done in hopes that it might be of some help to researchers.
