This two-part cemetery is composed of a southern roughly rectangular section of about 2 acres, the Chipman Cemetery, and a larger rectangular section adjoining it up the hill to the north, the Rocklawn Cemetery. The oldest part of this cemetery is the Chipman section, which was the family cemetery for the Chipman's, some of whom were prominent shoe manufacturer's. Most of the families buried here were from the eastern part of Marlboro. Most of the markers in the early section are simple in design and devoid of most decoration. While the Chipman section is from the earlier part of the 19th century, the Rocklawn section was opened in the latter part of the 19th century and laid out in a grid of north to south paths. As in the Chipman section, many of the stones are unadorned, but there are some examples of more fanciful obelisks, monuments as well as a receiving tomb from c. 1880.
The cemetery is illustrative of the transition from family/neighborhood burial grounds to publicly-owned and regulated cemetery in Marlboro.
The cemetery sits on about 7.93 acres. In 1995 there were approximately 1000 headstones, the earliest marked stone is ca. 1813. Burials after the 1990s are very sporadic.
The Massachusetts Historical Commission refers to this cemetery in MACRIS as MAB.809 Chipman and Rocklawn Cemetery.
This cemetery is referred to as GR3 Chipman Cemetery (Rocklawn) in the "Vital Records of Marlboro Massachusetts to the end of the year 1849."
