|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This lovely Old Sign sits between the 2 Cemetery entrance roads on Wolf Creek Road .Although it says New Hope Cemetery , there is 2 Cemeteries at this location. New Hope Cemetery is the old Cemetery that began being used some time after 1824 , when New Hope was 1st founded. Over 100 years later this Cemetery had filled and many of graves were unmarked. For fear of opening graves where there was existing graves or the possibility of burying someone on top of another grave, The Church Leaders chose to discontinue any new burials. There have been burials in the old cemetery since , but they were where the person already had a grave plot next to a marked grave of a spouse or family member.
Mr Truitt who was a Faithful , Devout and Devoted Church Member at New Hope , bought the adjoining property to New Hope so that his Church Family would continue to have a burial place .
Unfortunately , My Truitt died in a mining accident and was one of the early burials in his New Boykin Truitt Cemetery.
All of the graves in Boykin Truitt were buried after the early 1940's. Any graves that were buried before that are in New Hope Cemetery.
My information came from history from sisters Bobbie Stevens and Olivia Vick. I was proud to call both of these special Ladies My friend's , who I listened to, to learn all I could about local history and From article written by Sarah Olivia Williamson Vick for Heritage of St. Clair Co. and From Mr. Don Bowman , Board Member for Boykin Truitt Cemetery Association.
