On the Maverick-Altgelt Ranch on North Boerne Stage Road
Notes: The ranch, originally owned by the Altgelt family, was purchased by George Maverick in 1907 and was owned by 12 of his descendants as of 1992. It has been reported that attempts to get permission to abstract information on the gravestones have been unsuccessful.
The Maverick Ranch, twenty-five miles northwest of San Antonio on the old San Antonio-Fredericksburg road, comprises approximately 850 acres of Hill Country covered with native oaks, grasses, shrubs, and madrona trees. A walled spring on the site feeds a tributary of Leon Creek.
The ranch was established in 1869 when Ernst Hermann & Emma (Murck) Altgelt built the main house, a portion which burned in 1916, and a separate kitchen with bedrooms, limestone schoolhouse, & log blacksmith cabin. The ranch was their summer home, & Mrs. Altgelt named it Wassenberg, a name used by subsequent owners. Both Altgelts are buried on the ranch.
