|Cemetery notes and/or description:|
This cemetery is on the grounds of what is now the Minnesota Security Hospital where those declared by the state to be mentally ill and dangerous are committed, including predatory sexual offenders. One may not go to the graveyard without an appointment and an escort. Call Betty McGraw at 507-985-2249 for an appointment. Also, in some seasons the cemetery is not accessible at all because it is at the top of a steep hill with a road that my be blocked by snow, ice, mud or even a partial wash out.
In 1866 the Legislature established the first "Minnesota Asylum for the Insane" in St. Peter. It was later known as the St. Peter State Hospital, and is now called the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. Originally this was the cemetery for the Asylum and then the State Hospital whose patients were those deemed insane at the time but without any suggestion of criminality. The Regional Treatment Center was rebuilt on the north side of town when the facility's purpose changed. Since 1994 Remembering with Dignity Minnesota has been overseeing the marking of all graves in State Hospital cemeteries with simple markers giving names and years of birth and death to replace the original 3 digit metal tags which marked the graves.
