Cole Cemetery History
(Ligonier Township Cemeteries by William L. Iscrupe)
"It is not known when the first United Brethern circuit riders came through the area, but records indicate that the Rector congregation may have been formed as early as 1837. Martin Phillippi and his wife, Elizabeth Ankney, sold a plot of their land to this congregation for the sum of one dollar; and in 1846 the church building was completed and dedicated. Martin died in 1852 and was the first burial in the cemetery. By 1876 the old Phillippi farm had come into the hands of J. Cole (It has been known as Cole Cemetery since that time). In 1894 a new picket fence was constructed around the cemetery. By 1924 the church had ceased to operate; and in March of 1927 the building and grounds were sold to N.A. Friedline for the sum of $50. A stone monument now marks the site of the old church which was town down sometime between 1927 and 1931.

Cole Cemetery is approximately 60 yards long by 25 yards wide, and contains 117 discernible burials. It is bounded on the front by a stone wall, which runs parallel to a private drive; and on the left, right, and rear by a row of pine trees. Classified as abandoned, the cemetery is maintained by Rolling Rock Farms."
