Cemetery notes and/or description:
Isanti Union Cemetery was founded on Dec 14, 1903, when the trustees of the South Isanti Baptist Church of rural Isanti, signed the certificate of ownership of the land. Original family lots (8 graves) were sold for $10.00. In 1917, these family lots were increased to $17.00, with single graves offered at $2.00. The very first burial took place in April of 1904. In the early years, each family had to take care of their own lot. By 1938 over 145 burials had been recorded. This necessitated that a Cemetery Board be organized in 1938, with appropriate by-laws created, and a caretaker being hired for the first time. There have been only four caretakers since 1938. By the early 1950s the yearly care fees had been phased out, and perpetual care became a part of the purchase cost. The 300th burial occurred in 1955. Additional land was purchased in 1966 to the east of the original cemetery site, virtually doubling the size of the cemetery. In 1967 cement burial vaults were made a statewide requirement, with the exception of infant burials. (It is noted that many cement vaults were already in use prior to 1967.) In 1985 the Cemetery Board decided to create a baby section for infant burials. To date 20 lots have been used in the baby section. In November of 1990, the 1,000th burial at the cemetery was performed. There are more than 225 veterans interred here. The first inurnment burial was in 1997. Since the late 1990's about 20% of burials are via inurnment, and each is required to have a its own grave site. Currently there are more than 1,125 burials in this remarkably well maintained and beautifully seasonally decorated cemetery
